An easy run around the town centre following no particular course. I ran over the old cattle market as this is set to change beyond recognition over the next year as the new shopping development is built. On the whole I welcome it but still will miss seeing livestock animals in what was the heart of the working part of this town.
For ever more gone will be the days when you could see pigs, cows and sheep being brought to market to be sold and we will only be able to read about it in books such as those by Adrian Bell. I believe it might have been his book called Corduroy which desribes his experience as an apprentice farmer bringing cows to market at Bury and drinking at the Rising Sun. In this book (if I have got the right one) he describes how a bull gets loose and runs amok in Risbygate Street. Incidentially Adrian Bell is the father of war correspondent and mp Martin Bell. Adrian Bell was also founder of the Times crossword.
