I came off the A 134 at Cornard Tye between Sudbury and Newton and drove into Great Cornard. The village is a large expanding area which to all intents is now totally joined and appears to be a suburb of Sudbury in the same way as Moreton Hall and Bury St Edmunds.

There are a number of large Council Estates build before and after the 2nd World war at Prospect Hill and Cats Lane.Ekwall states that the definition of Gt Cornard is corn lands. it would seem the original village is some what overshadowed by all of the housing development

After parking up I wasn't sure where to run to but expected a busy run around streets at this rush hour time. I think I shall remember the run mostly for the number of pubs and some of them with unusual names.

The Maldon Grey is apparently named after a Grey mare which habitually bolted from Maldon in Essex and not stopping until it reached the public house.

There is a nice parkland area known as the Pot Kilns with many paths leading to a hilly area with some good views over the housing estates. There are said to be many caves and chalk mines here which has lead to 1-2 subsidence scares in the past.

I would have to say Gt Cornard is not the prettiest place in Suffolk but if you look hard enough there are some areas of interest especially the pubs.
