Now here is a novelty. A run in the rain! Yes I left my run on day 12 of Juneathon to this afternoon when it rained. It was lovely once I had got over the initial barrier of stepping out in to the rain. It was a novelty as it we have had the driest spring I can ever remember and we have been in drought conditions. However this afternoon we finally, finally got some real rain and wind.
With glasses you don;t see much when there is a steady downpour and after a while the rain washes the sweat into you eyes so they sting as well. But you practically have the streets to yourself and I prefer it to running in hot weather. A hot bath was my reward.
I got in a 5 mile run making my total for Juneathon 50.25 miles.

Running in the Rain with Glasses
| St Johns Bury St Edmunds |
It soon began to lightly rain as I set out out on a 5 miler around Bury St Edmunds. I don't mind running in the rain. For me it is preferable to windy, icy or hot conditions. The only downside for me is that I wear glasses. As the rain became steady and I warmed up my glasses fogged up and were wet. Your vision is then rather limited and occasionally as I run I have to try and find something to dry the lenses on even if it just gives 2-3 minutes of clear vision before they become smeary again. At some points I give up and run holding my glasses as I can see more. There isn't really a worry about tripping and falling over with smeary glasses its just that you can't see as well and take in your surroundings so you are almost running blind.
Something I have never tried, but thought of whilst getting wet this morning was those demister products you can get for wearers of glasses playing sport. I don't know if they work or are just a gimmick and I am not sure exactly where you would buy them from. A quick look on the Internet suggested a motorbike shop . Anyone tried a demister product for their glasses and do they work?
I completed my run as the rain became more heavy carrying my glasses as I reached home. I ran my last mile a bit faster as there was an added motivation to get home in the dry. But as I say I don't mind a run in the rain and somehow the shower always feels a bit better as I kind of reward.
I am hoping to reach 100 miles of running probably on Monday all being well. Keep on running Janathoners.

Wet & Windy Monday Run
After much procrastination and delay whilst I watched never ceasing wind and rain I eventually decided that I needed to get out for a run regardless of the conditions. I have just got over a week when I have had a head cold which has laid me low as far as running is concerned.
However today I finally felt better and with just the weather to contend with I decided to do a very short run. It was a hat , gloves and tracksters kind of day. It was windy enough that I lost my hat at one point and from then on I had to regularly pull down on the hat to keep it on.
I did just 2.5 miles as I felt really rusty not having run for a week. But the main thing was venturing out for a run on such a wet and windy day rather than the distance.

Running in the Rain
The thought of it is always worse than the experience. Tonight after work it was dark and it was steadily running. As I headed to change into my running gear just for a moment I had a passing thought shall I give it a miss? What if I don't run tonight and instead do a longer session tomorrow to make up for it ? As its raining its a ready made excuse not to go and just give it a miss.
However with the weather being milder I ventured out and the steady rain meant I was fairly soaked through by the end of my 6.6 mile run. By then I didn't mind that it was raining , in fact after a mile I didn't mind that it was raining. I had actually forgotten how enjoyable it is to run in the rain as long as it is not combined with strong winds.

When it is raining and you go past people on there way home from work with their umbrellas up and coats and scarfs trying to shelter from the elements they almost seem to give you a longer look than normal. Whats in their minds? Perhaps it is pity cause you are wet. Or maybe it is a thought that you, a runner in the rain, must be crazy. After all what are you doing out running its dark, cold and wet are you mad! Perhaps some secretly admire you and it might just inspire 1-2 to give running a go or take up some form of exercise.
As I ran round avoiding most but never all of the big puddles the air feels cleaner and fresher from the benefit of the rain. I know the shower will feel so much better after a run in the rain. Its the contrast of having overcome the elements returning home soaked and then warming up under a hot shower and feeling glowingly good afterwards.
Having said all of this I will still look to the heavens and wish it was dry next time I am due to run and it is raining!
Another run in the bag as part of my half marathon week 8 training schedule. Only another 4 and a bit weeks before the race.

As I set out the recent heatwave appeared ready to break and I was in two minds as to whether to run. For the first half of the course the wind picked up and leaves and dust were picked and blown up. It was very squally I got dust in my eyes and down my fruit but there was no sign of rain. It was feeling very humid and in need of rain.
However as I turned for home near Sainsburys I started to see lightning forking through the sky and an impressive sight it was. Rumbles of thunder suddenly became much loader and I appeared to be running into a storm . I still half belived I might get all the way around with out any rain but this suddenly changed when I reached Eastgate and the Fox Inn.
The rain simply belted down and in seconds I was soaked through. I could hardly see, as the rain beated down and the roads became rivers and my feet simply squelched through puddles. The pavements were clear and all mine as I ran home soaked through but feeling good after my free shower.
I guess with the thought of lightning in my mind I ran fairly quickly and registered a good time
