One Slow Janathon Mile and Podiobooks

Share
Day 25 of Janathon and this morning with little time to spare I managed to fit in a mile between needing to visit the town centre in Bury St Edmunds and then drive over to Ipswich.

This is the lowest mileage I have done in a day in January and perhaps the wheels have finally come off as we enter the final straight of this Janathon event. I hope not. Tomorrow I am hoping for renewed energy and to do a longer run .

Thanks for your comments and interest yesterday in the Neovite product -  Midgie, Martyn, Lena and Ian I have never taken a food supplement  before and am open minded as to whether this will achieve any results. I would presume it would take a few weeks/months before I would expect to notice anything. From what I have read some claim a noticeable improvement in running performance with improved times, some just noticed a better resistance to colds and others were not sure if it achieved anything. Pity really that I am only now trying it as I need the pick me up right now in this final Janathon week.

I did reach and pass the 100 mile mark yesterday for miles run in January. Thanks for words of encouragement from Midgie,Martyn,Lena and Ian above and also There's a six pack under here, abradypus.

Thanks to Eating trees for the advice on wearing glasses in the rain. I don't own a baseball cap but perhaps I need to get one. I can see the advantages in warm and wet weather. I will certainly give the washing up liquid trick a go before tomorrows run and feedback after a while.

Over the last few days while I have been running I have been listening to an audio book.  I really do recommend a site called Podiobooks.com. It is totally free to download audio books with the typical range of genre from Fiction,Fantasy,Historical Fiction,Mystery,Factual,Science Fiction to name but a few.  The blurb from their site states

"Why are authors making these versions available for free? Many authors do this to get exposure for their work, others do it in the hopes you'll buy a physical copy of their current or perhaps next work in development. Still others simply do it for the sheer joy of writing. And while it's not required, you have the option to donate money to the author of your choice."

You can click and listen to a book on your computer or click the Itunes button to subscribe for free to receive chapters of a book when they are released.

Listening to a book is good fun on a run and If I can recommend one author to you then it would be Nathan Lowell. The genre is science fiction and his stories of the golden age of the solar clipper are excellent.

Week 9 of my Half Marathon Training

Share
I am really uping the anti as I head towards the final weeks of my 12 week Runners World SMART Coach training schedule. The main thing for me will be to avoid injury so I get to the starting line fit and prepared on the 28th March for the Joe Cox Half Marathon  at Stowmarket Suffolk.

Today's training called for a 6 mile tempo run sandwiched between a mile warm up and warm down for an 8 mile total. The conditions were just about perfect cool bright blue skies, temperatures cool enough to make me think twice as to whether where some thin gloves but I decided not. I am still wearing tracksters and a thermal top as we haven't got to the point of bear legs for training yet. However the signs of spring are all around the days are getting longer , snow drops are abundent in the hedgerows, we are through February hurrah!!

I warmed up for a mile doing an 8.39 mile whilst listening to a new download from Podiobooks called Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell. This is a free science fiction novel where the main character Ishmael Wang just happens to be a runner in his spare time. This is a really good listen and totally free from their site.

The blurb on the site promotes the book as folows

A Trader's Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper : Book 1

When Ishmael Wang is orphaned by a flitter crash, he must make some hard decisions about how to survive in a Company-owned universe. With limited time and fewer options, he lands a job as the newest hand on the Solar Clipper Lois McKendrick and learns there's more to life than making coffee. Join Ish, Pip, Big Bad Bev, and the rest of the Lois McKendrick's crew as they sail the galaxy in search of profitable trade.

The book offered a very good distraction as I got in to my tempo run my longest to date being a six mile effort.  My mile splits showed the following times 8.21, 8.32,7.54,7.52,8.05,8.02. I was conscious that this was a 6 mile temo and took the first two miles a little to easily. When I noticed my watch I speed ap a little and my times improved so that I averaged 8.08 miles for a time of 48 mins 49 seconds. I was pleased with this though my schedule did ask for 7.58 miles so I didn't achieve this and have a long way to go still.

My run today took me out along the Mere Lane a very quiet single lane road where I generally don't see any traffic, just the odd farmer tilling the soil

I jogged home the last mile my work done in a 9.05 mile

I sold the moon

Share
On my rest day I downloaded another free audio book from Podiobooks.com called I sold the Moon ( a true storey ) by Barry McArdle

This is already an enjoyable listen and will accompany me on some of my training runs in the next week or two on my IPOD.

The forward for the book

Just because it happened, doesn't mean you'll believe it.

Take a rollicking ride through the 1970s with the original Moon Man, Barry McArdle, a silver-suited street performer and comic philosopher who spent ten years crisscrossing America selling lunar real estate (transportation not provided). As told by the author, I Sold the Moon! explores how a young man, fresh out of college, could get the idea that he could claim the moon, and then sell it. Exactly what drugs was he on? Well??..

Moon Man's adventures are paralleled throughout by a more earthly concern: his romance with a young woman as adventurous as he, in the turbulent days of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. The story of this "first love" is threaded from the opening chapter until the final page. I Sold The Moon! is for anyone who believes in following their dreams and searching for true love. It's cosmic, perceptive, passionate and fun. Mostly fun. Hear it here from the one, the only, the original Moon Man.

Day 33 of Half Marathon Training

Share
My Runners World SMART Coach schedule called for another 5 mile run at a 9.15 pace. The weather was very good dry sunny and mild. I still wore tracksters and a sweat shirt but no second layer, gloves or hat were required to day.

My run took me through the centre of Bury St Edmunds. I listened to an audio book on this run which I downloaded from Podiobooks.com. Whats good about Podiobooks is that they are entirely free and you can subscribe via ITunes to serialised episodes as they are released.

The authors are unknown to me so you take a chance on the quality but you will soon tell if it is any good and if not cancel your subscription to a book and switch to something else.

I am listening to Dreaming of Deliverance which is entertaining and I have taken a chance on because of the cover. I am onto about chapter 8 and the main character is a runner but this isn't a storey about running at least not so far.

The promo blurb for the book is as follows

Five years ago when Lindsay Paulson, a naive college student and talented distance runner, was 18, she was convicted of drug smuggling. Now, halfway through a 10-year prison sentence, she begins having what seem to be dreams, in which she leaves her cell in the night and visits another reality called Trae. Dreaming of Deliverance tells of Lindsay’s experiences both in Trae, where she finds herself among people enslaved by terrifying creatures, and in prison where she tries to make sense of what’s happening in her sleep: Is she actually escaping from prison somehow or is she losing her mind?

I completed my 5 miles in 43.34 doing mile splits of 8.22,8.35,8.57,8.39 and 8.59
